I encourage everyone to give your shop a little tune up. Here are some tips if you decide to update your shop:

put your shop on vacation
build hype on your shops social networking sites
add in new products
update old products photos

I have made myself a great foundation for my shop to build off of in the future. I have my prices and photo style figured out. It makes me want to fill it up and keep creating. If you guys decide to do the 2 week shop tune up please let me know, I would love to follow your journey.

This weekend I worked on updating my profile and shop policies.

Things to include in your shop policies are:

Welcome.

Include information you believe shoppers need to know to be comfortable buying from you. Don't forget to add in your personality.

Payment.

Let buyers know what forms of payment you accept.

Shipping information.

How do you ship items?
Do they come gift wrapped?
How long after payment do you ship?

Refunds and Exchanges.

Be clear on what your policies are when it comes to damages, lost packages, wrong fit, and etc.

Try to avoid be negative. Use your words wisely and keep it warm and friendly.

Day 9 & 10

Using your titles and tags to their fullest potential can increase your shop views drastically. Here are some tips for coming up with great titles and tags. Grab a pen and paper. Start brainstorming.

What is it?

Who is it for?

How is it made? What techniques did you use?

What materials did you use?

What color is it?

What is the style?

What are your influences?

What scent or flavor is it?
(if it has one)

What is it's use?

Put yourself in the buyers shoes, how are they going find your item. Use your Etsy shop stats to help with keywords and titles. Don't use unnecessary words. A title that is direct and simpler will show up better that a long over exaggerated title.

See trending keywords in treasuries and in the Etsy newsletters. Be honest, don't use words that don't relate to your products, thats just a waste of a tag.

Day 8

Day 8 is all about assessing your prices. Are your prices too high? Are they too low?

Underselling items can cause many dilemmas. When buyers see you have "cheap" prices they think why is this so cheap? Is it poor quality? All though this may not be the case, customers can't see or feel your product. They rely on your photos and the pride you have in your work to assure them of the purchase.
Another problem underselling products can cause is demand. I have learned this first hand. My first craft show I sold completely out, I had a pretty large amount of inventory for my first show and I had my items priced way to low. I sold out before the show was over and all though I was ecstatic when I added up my expenses vs my profit I didn't make that much.

If your items are overpriced how do you know? Research your competition. Find sellers like you with like products in quality. If your prices are way over figure out why? How can they sell their products for so much less, and if you can adjust your prices do so. If you are happy with your prices but are at a higher point, try adding smaller or less expensive items into the mix.

If you have no idea where to start when it comes to pricing ask yourself these questions.

How much are supplies?
How long did it take to make it?
How unique is it?
What techniques do you use to make it?
What makes you stand out?

There is so much that goes into pricing. Time and experience are sometimes best when it comes to it. The number one thing to keep in mind is pride. Be proud of your work. You are a handmade artist taking chances and putting your creations out there. If that isn't worth something then I don't know what is.

Day 7.

Photography, probably one of the most important elements of selling online. The only visuals potential customers get of your products are what you provide. It can make or break a sale. It can be what gets you on the front page, featured in treasuries and individual views online.

Your photos and style of photos can be a big help in getting you recognized. Use your photos as part of your brand and style.

Below are some tips on great photos. Keep in mind certain things apply to your style and what you sell.

Keep it simple. Take your photographs against a clean simple background. Now this does not mean it has to be white. Oh no, explore with different backgrounds, different textures, wood grain etc. De clutter your space. Don't have a bunch of irrelevant junk in the photo. Try not to use frames and borders and if you must put a watermark keep it small and simple.
Natural Lighting. Open up the shades and set up your photography station. Try to avoid using flash.
Macro. Most if not all cameras have a macro setting. Its the little flower/tulip. This is extremely important if you photograph small detailed items like jewelry.
Tripod. Get one. It doesn't even have to be a tripod. A stack of books, a chair, your desk. Just keep it steady champ. No body likes a blurry photo.
Manual. Take a risk. Learn your camera, it can be your money maker. Learn about white balance and aperture. You don't have to have a fancy camera to have great photographs just learn to get the most out of what you got.

All though my Canon looks better my lil oh point and shoot looks pretty good.

As you can see I am going with a different approach than a plain background. I know its not typical and it may cost me some slots in treasuries but I am wanting to stick out. I want noticeable photos and when I search through the plush section I want my product photos to stand out.

Day 6.

Branding is very important when it come to your business. Having a "look" helps online buyers feel secure and confident in purchasing from your shop. When visitors view your Etsy shop you want them to feel like they have entered the world of your work. You want to carry an aesthetic online, in your packaging, photography and in person.

Here are some questions to ask when creating your brand:

What do you sell? How is it different from others?
Who is your target market? Who are your buyers and who are they buying for?
Does your shop have a mission? Do you have a cause and what does it mean to you?
Do you have one thing people could identify your shop with?

Ask your self these question. Make a list. Do you have a reoccurring theme in your answers?

Now that you have an idea on how to create your brand, you will use this tool to build a cohesive, professional looking shop.

Some ways to execute your brand include:

Graphics. Use your shop banner, use certain fonts and colors to evoke your brand. Stay consistent and simple, but involve your shops personality.
Photography. This is a big part of how I brand my shop. I take my photos in the same spot. I use the same background and take my shots in the same angle. They have the same exposure of lighting and when you view my page it looks clean and simple.
Cohesiveness. Use the same graphics you use in your Etsy shop throughout you presence on the web. Use it for your facebook page, your shop blog, & twitter. Use your graphics and colors for your business cards, packaging, and put your logo on EVERYTHING. You can even do little freebies like pocket mirrors or magnets with your name.
Descriptions. Use your shop voice in your descriptions. Reflect the personality of your brand with your words. Tell customers how your product is unique to just your shop. Something I do is use my shop name to name my product. I.E. Honey Bunnies or The oh honey child fox.
Customer Service. Use customer service to seal the deal. Being from the Oklahoma we all know how to treat folks. We know how to lay on the sugar and when folks receive a product from you, you want them to feel like they have also received a little piece of Oklahoma. I use words like folks, honey, darlin', friend, y'all, peach etc. to really convey my shop personality and my personality. It's quirky and fits me. It may not be the bit for everyone one, but you can keep in mind how your mommas and grand-mommas raised you :).

There is no end to how you can brand your shop. If you don't know much about designing graphics or where to begin, research it. Learn how to do these things, they are very important to the success of your business. If you don't want to learn or just can't get the hang of it HIRE someone. There are many talented and local designers out there. They can give you what you want.

Now I am off to make a new shop banner and design some new business cards.

Day 4 & 5

This weekend was a work weekend. I finished what items I wanted to make in preparation for my complete shop makeover. Sometimes it all about the preparing and making and stuffing and stitching and when you think you have done enough you probably need to do a little more :D.

I can say I'm happy to have 20 new items to have for my shops relaunch. This is a great start to getting my Etsy shop in the position I want it to be in. I say 20 items is good for me because I make one of a kind plush animals that take time to make each one unique. I only draw up 5 patterns at a time to ensure the quality of my product and to make sure I don't try to rush through 15 individual critters.

Week two is now well underway. This will cover branding, photographing, pricing, cohesiveness, tagging, social networking, and finally seeing all my hard work pay off.

Day three is all about taking care of business, and folks I have to say I am knocking my list down fast. Today I designed two new patterns, finished prototypes, and stitched some pillows. I have been listening to Pandora, enjoying the rain and crossing things of my list.

Hey folks! Day two of the 2 week challenge. Today I will be talking about time management. To get the most out of my day I try to make a schedule to follow by. For my challenge I am scheduling everything including house chores and errands. This way I know what I can accomplish and I can meet deadlines.

I am looking at these next couple of weeks like I am scheduled at a job. I will be in my office by 10:00. Take an hour lunch. Then work until 5:00.

This Saturday I am going to make a trip to pick up supplies, but to make up for that I will do some over time on Sunday ;).

I know most folks don't have the time like I do. With day jobs and kids its hard to find time to do it all, but I promise if you sit down and make even one hour everyday you will see an improvement.

Recap from yesterday's post I can already cross one thing of my list. I finished all my nerdy bears today :).

Setting Goals.

I am a list person. I make list for everything. List are a major component when it comes to my productivity level. I love the satisfaction of crossing off item by item, finalizing the completion of my tasks.

Day One of the 2 week challenge will be making a goal.

Make your goals realistic.

My goal list:

Make 5 Nerdy Bears.
Finish Unicorn Pillows (2).
Finish Beard Pillows (2).
Make at least 5 new Owls.
Photograph all above.
Photograph foxes.

I am giving myself until February 15th to finish these task. I want to have at least 30 items in my shop by the end of my 2 week challenge.

So folks get to it, start making goals and crossing them off the list.

Hello team! Britt here with a challenge. I am putting myself to the test and making my Etsy shop the best it can be. I believe in my products and work and I know that if I applied myself to my Etsy shop like it was my full time job it could be a big success. So here I bring to you the 2 Week Challenge. I will be documenting my steps to improve my shop and my productivity. If you guys would like to participate hop on it, or if you would like to wait it out and see my results your welcome too.

Below is basic outline of what these 2 weeks will involve.

Everything covered in this challenge will be my opinions and observations. I research selling advice and tips on Etsy all the time. I am subscribed to all the news letters Etsy sends out and I actively read the forums. All of these things will be what I apply to the betterment of my shop. I also will be doing tutorials and teaching you how to get the most out of your Etsy statistics. I hope this is a success and any seasoned pros that would like to chime in please do. Like I said, these are my opinions and observations.

At the end of the 2 weeks I will put my shop up for a critique so you all can tell my how you think it looks.

Tell us about you and how you started your handmade business?

Hi! I’m Amanda … corporate creative by day, crafter by night. Oh, and I am married, have a 1 year old & 4 year old. So, yeah, pretty busy. I’ve had an Etsy shop since 2006 and until about a year ago, I mostly sold handmade Virgin of Guadalupe retablos & shrines that I made out of cigar boxes. I’ve had a love affair with Guadalupe since college (I studied a lot of Mexican American literature) so it was only natural to create a room full of cigar box shrines, right? After that, I took a LONG hiatus and reopened and rebranded my shop. I also went back to my roots, which was my love for making jewelry and accessories.

Where are you located?

I grew up in OKC, lived in Norman for several years while I went to OU, and am now craftin’ it up in the burbs in Yukon, OK.

What inspires your work?

Natural elements, vintage pieces, fabric! And hardware stores! I have recently learned how creative I feel after browsing through the nuts and bolts section at Lowe’s.

Another inspiration is honestly MY inability to accessorize myself. I walk into stores and feel so ho-hum about everything. I’m never quite sure how to put it together. I have in my head what I want to wear, but I just don’t see it. So I always set out to create something I would want to wear, and I just hope there are others out there who love the same things.

Favorite Handmade/ Antique/ thrift shop?

I have to say, I’m biased, because I now have three brick & mortar shops that carry my items: The Art House in Tulsa, Paisleys & Peonies on Rt 66 in Yukon and most recently Unlabeled Apparel in Norman. Visit them!

I am a VERY devout shopper at Central Oklahoma Goodwill shops. I get many of my materials there! I like to repurpose and reuse. Most of my scarves and bags are upcycled jersey tshirts, & some of my beads are from awful 70’s necklaces that I’ve pulled apart to reuse.

As far as antique shops go, there is nothing that can compare to a good estate sale. But if you can’t lug the kids from house to house, like me, The Rink Gallery in OKC is the bee’s knees.

Where do you see your handmade business in the future?

I really like where this year has taken me in terms of networking with other crafters, as well as store owners. I think that sometimes the social/networking part of being a handmade crafter can be the hardest part of the gig. Like deciding to do a craft fair, planning my first trunk show … it’s a little intimidating, but I’ve learned so much already. I really just hope to continue creating things I love and just see where that leads.

I’m having my first trunk show in Norman Feb 10th 6-8pm at Unlabeled Apparel (FREE CHOCOLATE + FREE WINE). I hope it goes well, and I hope to meet some Etsy folks too!

Small Business Tip: Making friends

In a world of competition and rivalries, it's good to have people that support you. Connecting with other small business owners isn't just a good way to meet people, it's a great way to network your business and share customers.Tonight, I'm sharing a simple tip: make friends with your craft community.

Sure, the tip seems easy. Being involved in local craft or Etsy groups (like this one!) is a great way to meet people in your area with similar interests. Non-crafty friends don't always understand the excitement of getting into a good craft show or designing new business cards.. but crafty friends do! But, there are some things to note.

DO

Connect with crafty friends on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. It's a great way to easily message and get to know people, but like any relationship.. don't be creepy.
Cross-promote businesses! Offer your friend's fans or blog readers a discount on their purchase with discount codes or have them host a giveaway for one of your items. It could open up a whole new customer base.
Support your fellow artists. Just because you aren't vending at a craft fair or being featured at a gallery doesn't mean you shouldn't attend or promote it through social media. Show them you're a fan-- that's what friends are for.
Share resources as you feel comfortable. There's a difference between being friendly and giving away trade secrets.
Build relationships with brick and mortar shops. Become a Facebook fan, follow them on Twitter, shop there, tell your friends about them. If you're consigning with a shop, show them some love! They're not the only one responsible for promoting your items. You need to get the word out.

DON'T

Don't force it. You won't always connect with everyone. Just like with dating, you don't build a relationship on one similarity alone. Be yourself and you'll find like-minded crafters.
Don't let them see you sweat. Rivalries are out there. Ever seen Storage Wars? Although they sure are fun to watch on TV, it's not a cute look in the handmade community. Believe in your business and don't dwell on the haters.. even if they try and send you nasty remarks to bring you down.

Holiday Traditions

Many families look forward to the holiday traditions they have established with their loved ones. Every year growing up, my mother would take me and my sister to our city's Christmas celebration. We would sip hot Dr. Pepper while walking through all the pretty light displays, roast marshmallows in a huge bonfire, make a craft in Santa's workshop, and then meet the big guy --Santa-- to tell him what we just had to have for Christmas. It was what I waited for each December.

Starting traditions with your family and friends at the holidays can make the season just a little bit more exciting. Me and my husband like to use the holidays as a reason to buy handmade. While big box stores are packed with stressed out shoppers, there's probably a local craft show set up in your area, with hundreds of artists just waiting to sell you unique, one of a kind pieces.

There are several local craft fairs happening in the next few weeks as the holidays approach. A quick Google search of your area will most likely turn out at least one or two shows, while there are two large indie shows produced by local crafters this season, right here in Oklahoma.

The Deluxe Indie Craft Bazaar is an indie craft fair and community event with free admission in Oklahoma City, where unique artists show and sell their work to enthusiastic shoppers from all over the region. This year's show will be on December 10, 2011, from 11am-5pm at the State Fairgrounds in the Centennial Building. There are over 80 vendors to shop from this year, and the line up is full of Oklahoma artists! You can find the full list of vendors here.

The Alliday Show is a free to attend, all handmade arts and craft show happening on December 17, 2011, from 9am-5pm in Tulsa, at the Ford Truck Exhibit Hall at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Expo Square. The Alliday Show believes that there is no reason why everyday can't be a holiday. Over 80 artists will be in attendance, and you can view the list here.

Also, there are artists all around the world working around the clock to produce the best holiday gifts you could give this season.. and you won't even have to fight an old lady for the last one on the shelf. The Oklahoma Etsy team is a great place to start when you are doing your online shopping. This is a current list of the OKetsy team members. Another way to find OKetsy team members is to search Etsy using the "oketsy" tag.

No matter what your holiday traditions may be, consider supporting your local shops and artists this season. They are working double time to provide the best gifts for you, while hoping to provide for their own families. Where can we find you shopping this season?

Managing Facebook Posts

Like every part of your business, your social media efforts should have a plan.

If you want to gain the most out of your Facebook fan page, take it seriously. This is free advertising for your brand, supported on thelargest social media network used daily. It's been reported that American Internet users spend more time on Facebook than any other website.

Start off by writing some goals. What are you hoping to gain from your presence? What kind of results are you looking for? What do you want your page to say about your brand? Keep these goals somewhere you can see them when you are planning your Facebook posts. Stay true to what you are hoping to convey and consistently work towards achieving those goals.

A fan page for your business is the place to talk about your shop, show off new items you are working on, get advice from your fans, promote craft shows you will be part of, and give fans a sneak peek at your life.

Post when you update your shop. Don't post a link to every single new listing, but if you add several new items, let your fans know!

Post about sales you are currently running, when the sale ends, and any stipulations or rules.

Ask your followers for their opinion if you are looking to create new items. What colors do they like best for clothing or jewelry, do they prefer a certain type of shirt or chain, what size prints do they buy the most?

Remind fans where you will be vending at and give them information about the shows. Link to the show's Facebook page or website so potential customers can get directions, show times, etc. Have a show that you aren't vending at, but will be shopping at? Advertise it and support your fellow crafters!

Give your fans a peek at your life. Show them where you create, post a recent photo from your world that means something to you, or share an exciting piece of news. When buying from a handmade business, fans want to know that you're a real person, too.

A fan page for your business is not the place to rejoice about the latest football win, post an album of your latest vacation photos, complain, or give a play by play of your day's plans. This is a little too personal for a business page and you don't want to start too much controversy with opposing views. Keep things light and entertaining.

Like I said in my previous Facebook post, don't over do it in one setting. This just clogs up everyone's news feed and can look bad on your business. If you have a lot of things you want to say, space them out. Keep a word document going of posts you'd like to make, and post them in a timely fashion. 1-2 posts a day is great, 3-5 can be pushing it, and anything over 5 posts in a day is just overshare.

Social networking is what you make of it. Do a little or do a lot, it's up to you. Feel free to make your own rules, and change things to fit your business. The resources are there for you! Secret!

Hey Friends, I recently recieved an Email from Etsy HQ called Team up for the Holidays. In it, they suggested a ton of great for productivity among the team. Most of the things they suggested we already do, but one thing that stuck out to me was doing a secret santa.

I love Secret Santas they are sooooo fun. So I will be the delegatory elf and set anyone who wants to particitpate up with their "receiver".

How do you hear about new stores in your area? I'm always on the lookout for a hidden gem.. a funky little shop with cool printed t-shirts and unique accessories and gifts for my friends. Do I have time to walk into every shop in town to hope to find something neat? Not a chance.

As soon as I hear about a new shop, I google them and check for a Facebook page. Sadly, most of the time, they don't have a social media presence.

Are you on Facebook? Yes. Are your friends, family, and worst enemies on Facebook? You bet. Why shouldn't your business be there, as well?

When I find a shop on Facebook or Twitter, I love it. I can see pictures of their store, see what kind of merchandise they have, and interact with them... at any time of the day. I can find out about sales, when they have extended or limited hours, and when they get in new items I've been wanting.

Online businesses are no different. Your shoppers are already on Facebook, so connect with them! It's easy to get your own Facebook page for your business, plus it's free. Facebook can walk you through it here.

I'd like to go in depth in future posts about ways to make your Facebook page the best it can be.. so until then.. here's a couple things to note:

Don't over-post. If you have a number of things you'd like to tell your fans about, post them over time. Blogs let you schedule posts, but Facebook does not (that I know of.. yet.) Keep a word document of posts you'd like to make if you think you will forget, and post them sporadically. Also plan to post them at times your readers will read them. If you are an online-only business (not a brick and mortar shop), limit your posts to 2-3 daily.
Communicate! Social media is all about interacting with your fans. Answer their questions, ask for their advice on new items, reply to their posts, and be friendly!
Get personal. Your customers aren't just buying from a company.. they are buying from a person.. and they'd love to know more about you. Isn't your handmade business a huge part of your life anyway? Not every post needs to be about your new products.. but share little snippets of your world. I love seeing what others are doing.. and how other crafters spend their time.

Your page is what you make it. So until next time-- post pictures, share interesting content, and publish your Facebook URL when connecting with your customers and fans: through your business cards, e-mail signature, on your Etsy page, etc. It makes a difference!

My name is Tessa Hamilton and I live in McAlester.  I enjoy many different types of crafts but above all else, I enjoy making jewelry.

Where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes right from the items I use in my jewelry.  I start with a stone, bead, crystal, etc. and the ideas of how I want a piece to look just come to me from there.  I especially love making custom pieces because my customers help focus my creativity by giving me some ideas about what they like. However, I don't just get inspiration from the materials I use, I also get inspiration from things around me.  A change in seasons may direct my attention to different color choices or a fashion trend my challenge me to try different materials.

What is your favorite media to work with?
I would have to say that sterling silver has been my favorite media to work with so far.  Sterling silver isn't as expensive as gold and I presonally wear more silver than gold.  I love cutting, bending, and soldering sterling silver.  The feeling of working with the tools and manipulating something in my hands to make something new and beautiful is truely gratifying.

 Where would you like to see yourself 5/10 years from now in this project?
In five years I would like to offer a larger selection of jewelry and as I currently only sell my pieces within the United States I would also like to be selling internationally.  In ten years I would like to expand my shop offerings to a full line of woman's accessories such as scarves, bags, and hair accessories.

What is one of your keys to success?
The key to success for me this far has been to keep finding new ways to get noticed.  I talk about TessaYvonne on my personal Facebook page, I also have a Facebook page for TessaYvonne, I place business cards in several places in town, I talk about TessaYvonne to anyone who is willing to listen, I get involved in Teams like the OKEtsy Team, I create treasures, and I wear my jewelry.  One because I like what I make, but it's also easy to talk to a stranger about TessaYvonne after they compliment something I have on that day.

What is one crazy thing about you?
My stepdaughter said the one crazy thing about me would be my two stepchildren.  My husband might agree.  I love them all and while they drive me crazy from time to time, I would have to say that one crazy thing about me is I shop in color.  It's something I do without noticing.  Depending on how I feel whether I'm shopping for jewelry materials or for clothing, I will buy items in a monochromatic fashion.  One shopping trip I will buy oranges and another trip I may bring home greens.

What is something you would love to learn how to do?
I would love to learn how to speak Italian.  I think the language is beautiful and I would love to go to Italy in my lifetime and be able to easily communicate with the locals as I sample their cheeses and take in the views.  Delizioso!

What is your favorite color?
My favorite color is yellow.  Though I like all colors, yellow makes me think of lemon scents and bright sunny days.  It's a cheery, clean color to me.

What do you love about Oklahoma? 
I love the people of Oklahoma.  They are warm and inviting, hardworking and giving, and they would do anything to help family, friends, and neighbors.  I think Oklahoma, especially where I live, is an excellent place to raise children.  I live in a rather small area which facilitates a close community and the morals and values I was raised with are all around.

My Best Craft Show Advice

The fall craft fair season is in full swing and most crafters are either living on caffeine as they prepare for the weekend's show, or cursing themselves for missing the deadline for yet another event.

I've been doing shows for 3 years now, and I've learned a lot through trial and error and the help of other crafters. I wanted to share one tip about shows that can save you a lot of money, time and effort.. I even made a little rhyme!

Vend the shows you'd want to attend

Vending at craft shows is a great way to promote your handmade business and gain customers, but you need to do some research before you send in your booth fee and spend countless nights preparing. My best advice would be to attend a show as a customer before attending as an artist. You may think you are missing out on a perfect opportunity by not applying, but like each artist-- each show is different. You'll want to take in everything and look at the show from all perspectives.. including:

Is there an admission cost to shop at the show? If so, what incentives do they get for their ticket price?
Who are the customers? Who is the show's target market? Do your items fit in with that market?
Is the show 100% handmade, or do they allow resellers?
Is there a variety of artists? Over-saturation can cause shoppers to overlook your items, thinking, "I just saw that, I just bought that, I don't need to look at more of those."
What is the crowd like? Ask vendors about foot-traffic and if they would do the show again.
Are there other activities at the show? Free music, food vendors, or children's activities can bring larger crowds, but just make sure that the main focus is buying awesome art, otherwise crowds may show up with little to no money for shopping.
Who is putting on the show? Are they known in the craft community, is the show established, or will they disappear into the night with your booth fee and then cancel the show? Being a little bit cautious never hurt anyone.
Do I have enough inventory to do a show yet? If you are just starting out and worry that you don't have enough product to even make your booth fee back, you may want to find a show that will let you share a booth with a friend. You can split the fee and will have someone there to talk to and won't have to worry about getting a stranger to watch your booth while you get food or use the restroom. Always check before applying that the show accepts booth sharing, since each one will have different guidelines.
Finally, read the application and guidelines! Check for times you can set up, when your fees are due, is the show for crafters in a specific state, do you need a tax permit.. Most of your own questions will be answered in the guidelines!

Researching for a show can seem like a lot of work, but if you can answer all those questions with positive responses... and the show has the environment you like and your customers would like.. then start prepping your application and get it submitted before the deadline! 10 Reasons Why You Should Buy Handmade

With the holiday shopping season fast approaching (most retailers already have their Christmas items on the shelves) it’s time to start planning your holiday shopping lists. This year, why not be adventurous and try buying some handmade products for the ones you love? Why should you buy handmade instead of the usual store bought products you’re used to, well I’m glad you asked. Here are ten reasons why I think you should shop handmade for the holidays.

Be original. Handmade products are usually one of a kind or produced in small batches so you don’t have to worry about gifting something the person already has or giving the same gift as someone else. Instead you’ll be able to find something just as unique as the person you’re shopping for and nothing brings a smile to someone’s face better than knowing you really cared enough to find them the perfect gift.
Support people, not companies. By giving your business to local artists and crafters you’re helping build a better economy without lining the pockets of overpriced corporations who’s only interest is the bottom line. People care about each other, companies care about themselves and getting as much of your hard earned money as possible. A crafter will appreciate your business while a corporation demands it. The choice seems pretty clear.
It’s more environmentally friendly. Handmade items are usually made from natural raw materials with much less waste and machine emissions than mass produced items. If your goal is to leave a smaller carbon footprint on the planet that you can’t go wrong with locally produced handmade items.
Build a personal connection with the person making your items. Craftspeople love what they do and not only does it show in their work, but also in their attention to customer service. Have a question about how something is made or what inspired it? Ask away and the crafter will be thrilled to tell you all about it. Handmade items have a story and a history that mass produced products will never have.
Avoid shopping at the mall. Holiday shopping can be pretty crazy and sometimes even dangerous as the days tick by. Why not save yourself the trouble of finding a parking space and braving the overcrowded big box stores by shopping local boutiques, craft fairs or even online handmade outlets like Etsy. Finding the perfect gift for a loved one should be fun, not frantic.
Get it customized. Since the items are made by real people you can often ask for little extras like customization or even fully commissioned work to your exact specifications rather than having to settle for whatever the store has in stock.
Handmade products are made with passion. Crafters pour their time, talent and passion into everything they make. Store bought items might all be the same size and specifications, but they will never have the heart or soul that a good handmade product is made with.
Quality counts. Because even the raw materials are individually selected by hand more effort is put into the quality of each individual piece. Crafters want each and every product they make to be of the very best quality as a testament to their work They don’t take mass produced shortcuts or shortchange the customer by using lower quality materials, just the best material carefully crafted into the best possible product.
More unique choices. An individual making a handfull of something is able to be more adventurous than a corporation which must sell ‘x’ amount of a product to be able to turn a profit. This means that handmade products can afford to be more unique and creative than store bought products.
More value for your money. Handmade items are made to last. While mass produced items must be made quickly for as little money as possible handmade products are made from only the best materials and techniques. Corporations don’t mind if their products break down over time, then you’ll just have to buy another one. A well cared for handmade product on the other hand can last generations. Perhaps that is the reason people are still crafting by hand today even with all the advancements in technology trying to render them obsolete.

Bonus Point! Know where your gifts come from. There is something empowering about taking control and making something yourself, or at least supporting someone who does. It’s making a conscious decision to spend your money on a quality item instead of a mass produced product built by machines and underpaid workers in a distant country. Show support to your local economy and buy from artists and crafters in your area this holiday season.

Lesson 2: Be Yourself

There are a bunch of local bars in the neighborhood where I live. Most of them have a retro or upscale feel to them. The buildings are well maintained and have interesting architecture and design. But this one bar really just looks like a hole in the wall. You know, the kind of bar you would expect to see in a student ghetto? No windows, no decoration, no class. Simply put, it looks out of place. I found myself wondering the other day why this bar doesn’t do something to make itself look more appealing to the eye. Why not renovate so you fit in with the rest of the neighborhood? I started thinking about how their business would bring in wealthier customers, and therefore bring in more money. But then it dawned on me that my assumption may not be correct.

You see, this people who run this bar know who they are as a business. They know that their bar appeals to a certain group of people, and they are not ashamed of that. They fit into an aspect of society. And perhaps if they renovated their bar to appeal to a different group of people, they business would no longer succeed. They may fit into the neighborhood better if they renovated, but they would be competing with local bars for the same group of people.

As small businesses (and humans in general), it is too easy to try to fit in to a mold instead of standing out as ourselves. While it is smart business to follow certain consumer trends and fashions, we do not want to change who we are in order to appeal to another group of people. We will just end up competing with other businesses for the same group of people, while leaving our original clientele without a business to serve them. And most importantly we lose sight of ourselves and our originality in the process. We are creators, not copiers. We cannot be afraid to be who we are, because really that is when we will be at our best. At the end of the day, I will succeed by just being me.

Dara's note: We often have newbies post in our forums with general questions of how to help their shops succeed. Because this has been a reoccurring theme, I decided that we would start a weekly post to help answer some general questions. Please know that I certainly am not an expert and that I am learning right alongside of you.

Lesson 1: Don't Get Discouraged

We all know how it is. You finally get the courage to set up a shop and list your babies, your creations, for the world to see. You dream of being an overnight success, and yet at the same time you are afraid of being an overnight failure. You check your email constantly for any sales. One day passes, then another, then another. Still no sales. Maybe a week passes, or two or three. Perhaps a month or more. Doubt starts to set in and you begin to wonder if you ever should have done this. You start to doubt your abilities and talent.

The good news is you are not alone! Most of us are not overnight successes on Etsy. Most of us do not bring in enough sales in our first few months (or years) to quit our days jobs or take lavish vacations. It takes time, lots of time, and effort to succeed on Etsy. Often times newbies will post in forums their discouragement and wonder what they are doing wrong. While we all have things that we can improve on (are we ever really satisfied with our photos?), not being an overnight success does not necessarily mean that you are doing everything wrong. Take time to learn what to do right by reading articles and blogs, but mostly give yourself time to learn and succeed. Don't let a lack of sales drive you away from Etsy. Make a decision that you are not going to quit or give in, and come learn with the rest of us! We are so glad that you are here :-)

Falling in love with Tulsa

I'll admit it- Tulsa hasn't always been my favorite place to live. I grew up in the Northeast and loved almost everything about it- the cities, the history, the cultures, the mountains, the ocean, the trees in the fall. Tulsa is hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. The wind blows right through you, and yet snow is almost unheard of here (well, except for Snowpocolyse 2011). And let's not get started on Tulsa's traffic!

But over the summer, I have started to see Tulsa in a different light. It all started when I moved from the suburbs to Riverside. Suddenly, instead of just driving past everything, I could walk to different destinations and really take in the sights. Brookside was no longer filled with traffic and crazy drivers, but I began to notice the incredible character and atmosphere.

The more I explore Tulsa from my new perspective, the more I fall in love with it. There is some great architecture throughout the city, and some buildings have been restored beautifully. Locally owned shops and restaurants are everywhere. Running and bike trails add a great touch to the city. Just the other day, my husband found a bike trail that offers a great view of downtown Tulsa. I had trouble continuing to pedal as I took it all in. I found myself incredibly thankful that I am able to live in this great city.

Tell me a little bit about Signing Time.

My sister Emilie Brown and I created Signing Time ten years ago. We didn’t realize my daughter, Leah was deaf until she was one-year-old because back then they weren’t doing the hearing test at birth. At 14 months we started signing with her and by 18 months she had over 50 signs. Of course we were signing because she was deaf, but we soon realized there are benefits to any child even if they’re not deaf. With sign language, kids can give clear, concise, brilliant information before they have the ability to speak.

My sister taught her son Alex signs so he could communicate with his deaf cousin Leah. Both kids were using finger spelling and they were reading words before they were two, but I was frustrated with how few people could communicate effectively with Leah. I hated to see her isolated because people didn’t know sign language. So when my sister called me and asked me if we could make a video that teaches children music, I told her I’d rather make a video that teaches kids sign language. We started out with one little video, a VHS tape that took us a year to make. We did it on credit cards and favors from friends and family. We didn’t have investors and we were busy moms.

How does social media play a role in marketing and publicizing your brand?

It takes out the middleman, and that‘s good and bad. It’s cool to be that in touch with the people who love what you do. People seem genuinely surprised that I actually respond. I don’t know what that’s a symptom of. I have a Facebook fan page and a Twitter account. When I’m traveling, I let people know where I am performing and where to buy tickets. My Twitter account also has personal stuff too, like when my youngest, Lucy was in her spelling bee and people were cheering her on, virtually of course. My accounts are really me, it’s real interaction. Once someone suggested I hire someone to manage those accounts, pretending they are me. I would never do that. I think the reason is that when I was seventeen I wrote to my favorite band. They wrote back and invited me to shows and they even ended up having my band as their opening act when they came through town. I was so moved by that and thought that if I’m ever in a position like that, I’m going to be generous. I think it’s silly when celebrities act resentful of the people who house and clothe them. Social media keeps everything fresh. It helps me keep a finger on the pulse of what our consumers, fans and friends really want.

How did you grow your brand from a small family venture to a large-scale enterprise that services people across the nation and around the world?

Emilie has always had a marketing mind. We bought the website SigningTime.com and put our videos on it. We quickly saw how word of mouth really made a difference in selling our product. Our brand grew because speech therapists told their clients to buy our videos, pediatricians wrote down our website on prescription pads for patients to browse, and friends told friends. We have enjoyed some great publicity because our company story is the personal story of our family. We’ve hardly invested in advertising in all ten years. It’s been a real grassroots effort. And I know that we still have a lot of room to grow.

We’re on public television and we also have music videos airing on Nick Jr. We now have 26 DVDs in the Signing Time series, and 4 Baby Signing Time DVDs. About a year and a half ago, we launched The Signing Time Academy, so that people who are passionate about Signing Time, and about sign language, can become certified to offer Signing Time and Baby Signing Time classes in their communities. We now have over 700 instructors in the U.S., Canada, China, Brazil, and Australia. We have them all around the globe. We started Signing Time 10 years ago, and I love that there are still avenues for us to reach people we would never have otherwise reached.

I think in the next five years sign language will get the recognition it deserves as an essential part of parenting. Ten years ago, when someone would see someone else signing with a child, they would ask if that child was deaf. Now, when people see someone signing, they often ask, do you have Signing Time? I think that‘s great.

How does Signing Time make its unique mark in the business world?

I think it’s coming. We’re in the process of creating some amazing things. We’re looking at ways of educating children that haven’t been done before. Signing Time was a great idea, but it may not be the best idea we’ve had yet. Emilie and I come up with new ideas for new products all the time and we have a couple of things brewing that we think will be revolutionary. Signing Time gave us credibility through exposure on public TV as well as cable, and the Emmy nomination, people see that we know what we’re doing. Our audience will always be children and their families and teachers, and we are really good at creating music with heart that’s catchy or inspiring. We have some ideas that aren’t focused on sign language. Most of our little fans are zero to four and we’re looking at what’s next for them. We have a number of really cool things on the horizon. So far, we have a track record of surprising others, and ourselves. We intend to keep that up.

The Ins and Outs of "Treasure Hunting"

Hi everyone! It’s Danielle again. Going to garage sales, estate sales, and flea markets is a big part of my job. I go out and look for treasure, photograph it, list it, and sell it to others that enjoy the convenience of shopping from their computers. Over the past year I feel like I have gotten so much better at treasure hunting than I was when I initially began. In this post I want to quickly share a few of the main things I have learned.

1. Going with a friend or family member is extremely helpful. The cost of gas is the biggest expense in going to garage sales, so by taking turns driving, it can lighten the load on everyone involved, and allow for greater profits.

2. Antique stores can often be a waste of time. Although once in a great while it is possible to find good deals, it happens very rarely and is not the always most effective use time. Most often the items are already priced at what they are worth, which doesn’t leave much room for Etsy sellers to make a profit.

3. A small town in the country’s city-wide garage sale can be amazing. I went to Newcastle’s city-wide garage sale in April not expecting much, but I found so many good deals. It seemed like there were older things and a lot of items with more character than I have found in big cities.

4. It is also a good idea to pack snacks and cold drinks. Almost every time I spend the day going to sales I end up spending more on food and drinks than I do on the items I buy for resale.

5. Finally, my last piece of advice is if you are looking for estate sales (which is where you can usually find more vintage than garage sales) it is super, super helpful to use a newspaper to locate them. I only started doing this recently, but it makes such a huge difference. My strategy before was always to look for and follow signs on the road or to look up a few on Craigslist and print off a map, but that was a huge waste of time and gas. Anyone can say anything on Craigslist, but if someone is willing to pay for a newspaper ad, their sale is usually legitimate.

Hi! It’s Danielle again. One of my last posts was about the Treasure Boat Antique Thrift Shop up by Tulsa. This week I want to share with you one of my favorite places close to where I live now, in Oklahoma City.

Mary’s Swap Meet is a large flea market that takes place outside every Saturday and Sunday morning, year round. It is located at the corner of Midwest Blvd and NE 23^rd St. It’s so good because it’s like fifty little garage sales all crammed into one place, and you can find all kinds of things there.

The trick with Mary’s though, in my experience, is that to get the good stuff you have to be there right when they open – which is at dawn. There’s still a lot of stuff there later, but for the really good deals it helps to get there as they’re opening.

They also have a fake old western town built where you can walk around for free and take pictures! Overall, it’s a pretty cool experience, and it’s worth waking yourself up before dawn to check it out at least once.

What is/was your inspiration?
I have been inspired by the work of: Tim Burton and Edward Gorey. There is also a woman on Etsy I have purchased from who makes amazing art dolls (which I now have 4 of :) who's work has really inspired me to grow and be a better artist.

What is your favorite media and why?
My favorite media is painting (with acrylics). I love to paint. It's very theraputic and relaxing.

What has been your favorite project?
My favorite project would be when I was preparing for the 2011 BlueDome Arts Festival in Tulsa. I decided I wanted to showcase my art there within 3 weeks of the Festival and had to make like 20 paintings in that time. It was crazy, but I did it and think it has been some of my best work!

Where would you like to see yourself 5/10 years from now in this project?
I'd still like to be taking part in local shows- but have grown as an Artist and become better and have had a billion sales :)

Do you have any keys of success to share?
Network!

What has been your biggest challenge in developing your shop?
Getting people to know about your shop. There's sooo many wonderful and talented Artist on Etsy that sometimes it's hard to stand out! So, the way I get noticed is to carry business cards everywhere I go and I wear my artwork on t-shirts just about everyday :)

Tell us one thing crazy about yourself.
This is gonna sound weird, but it's true... I have 2 toes the same size on my left foot ha :) TMI

What is something you would love to learn how to do?
Make art dolls out of paper mache. I admire those on Etsy who make beautiful dolls. I've tried, and it's harder than what you'd think!

What is one thing you love about Oklahoma?
My family is all in Oklahoma.

I get inspired by vintage material, when I go to the thrift store and find a piece of fabric I instantly know what I want to make with it.

Embroidery thread, or at the moment I am using pretty punch, I like to draw something and then bring it to life stitch by stitch.

3. What has been your favorite project?
One day I was doodling and I drew a picture of my bearded husband, I took that picture and stitched onto a pillow and added "Beards are Sexy", apparently I am not the only one that thinks so! Every time I sell one or make one it makes me giggle knowing its all because of my hairy man.

4. Where would you like to see yourself 5/10 years from now in this project?
I want to open a handmade store sooooooo bad, so I hope thats going down.

5. Do you have any keys of success to share?
Be persistent.

6. What has been your biggest challenge in developing your shop?
Keeping my Etsy updated! I do shows and I sell items in several shops, so keeping fresh items up is a challenge, but I have made it a priority.

7. Tell us one thing crazy about yourself.
hmmmmm crazy? I shaved my head once, just because...

8. What is something you would love to learn how to do?
I would love to learn how to throw pottery, or do screen printing, or wood work, or welding, or glass blowing, or.....

9. What is one thing you love about Oklahoma?

Tutorial: Easy Peasy Rosette Headband

You know all of those cool flowery headbands you see little girls wearing anymore? I'm sure you have especially if you frequent any craft blogs that feature children's items. And I'm sure you've noticed that there are about 6,000 different ways to make all of those flowers. While the thought of making one doesn't frighten me at all I just haven't gotten around to it. Until I saw a way to cheat with rosette ribbon (by the yard) at Hobby Lobby. It was so great. A satin row of rosettes stitched onto tulle. And they had it in multiple colors. So, my brain went to work and I took my kids all over Hobby Lobby gathering supplies.

Supplies: Rosette ribbon (I got 1/2 yd. = 18 in., but didn't use all of it. To use all of it would cover the entire headband if you want to go that route), a headband, thread that matches your rosettes, beads (I bought green tear drop shaped ones for leaves and crystal ones to add a little pizzazz), needle, and hot glue gun/sticks

Begin by taking a single strand of thread and knotting it at one end. Then pass your needle and thread through the tulle and grab a bit of the satin as well, to anchor it, a few times. Make sure to keep all of your knot at the back of the ribbon.

Once you have your thread anchored decide how frequently you want your green "leafy" gems and stitch them on. I did mine at the top right and bottom left of each flower. Make sure to anchor your gems on with a few stitches so that they don't come off easily and become a choking hazard for your little one if they should pull it off. If you will notice this ribbon is all stretched out and in-between each rosette there is some extra satin (it's in the shape of a heart but you can't really tell that). I wanted more fullness so...

I gathered the rosettes together on the back by stitching a few times from the top of one flower to the next and pulling tightly to make it gather. I did this at the top of each rosette pair and at the bottom.

Now when you flip it over it looks like this. Much fuller and more attractive don't you think?

I went back and added a bit more bling since this is basically a photo prop. Use the same technique as you did for the tear drop "petals" to secure each bead. I grouped mine in threes but each bead is secured individually.

After you have your beads all secured and everything as you like it secure the ribbon to the headband using hot glue. And then once it has cooled off try it on your kiddo to see how it looks:

Pardon the drool. She's teething. lol I would change the headband to a light pink if I could do it again. Just so it blended more. But, the outfit she will be wearing this with is a dirndl from Germany that her Grandparents bought her, and it is pink, green, and white. Hence the creamy white headband. And while she looks all rosey posey above...

Yeah...little miss teether didn't think it was all fun and games like mom did.

What is/was your inspiration? My children are my inspiration! More specifically my youngest daughter, Rayne. She is 3 and she inspires me on a daily basis. She’s a diva and a tomboy. She loves to dress up like a princess AND climb trees. She loves pageants and playing in the dirt.

I know that it sounds cheesy and silly, but there is no better feeling in the world than when someone compliments my little princess on something she’s wearing…a bow, a dress, whatever and she promptly responds “Momma made it!” With a giant smile on her face and a beautiful twinkle in her baby blue eyes!

What is your favorite media and why? Ribbon! I don't think I can ever get enough ribbon. (my husband thinks otherwise) I love ribbon, you can use it in SO many ways. The possibilities with it are endless!

Where would you like to see yourself 5/10 years from now in this project? I would like to be doing more consignment and wholesale, as well as a brick and mortar store front. My goal is to make my creations available to ALL the little divas and princesses out there.

What has been your biggest challenge with your shop? I guess I'd have to say time is a giant challenge. With a family of four children (ages 12, 11, 3, and 1) I'm not a lady with a lot of time on her hands. Somehow I find the time to enjoy my family, my friends, and still make everything work, though a few more hours in the day wouldn't hurt my feelings.

Do you have any keys of success to share? Promotion! I cannot stress enough the importance of promotion. You can get creative and find new and even FREE ways to promote all over the place. Social networking is a big key to that.
Tell us one thing crazy about yourself. Only one? Well...I'm a karaoke diva. That's right. I said it. Sometimes there's no better way to express how you're feeling than to belt out a tune at the top of your lungs.

What is something you would love to learn how to do? I would LOVE to learn how to crochet. I never really gave it the shot it deserved when I was younger and my mother was trying to teach me. It really is fabulous all of the things you can create when you know how to crochet.

What has been your favorite project so far? My favorite project so far was has been my new Diva Dazzle bows. They're so fun to make and I think they look absolutely adorable! I was really happy about how that particular "experiment" turned out.

What is one thing you love about Oklahoma? It's HOME. I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I love this state for so many reasons that it's hard to chose just one. But the best way to put it is the people are friendly and there's always something going on to do...it's home and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Please introduce yourself and your shop.
Luksi Creations (family owned mainly run by me Kiamichi Goodbear) -Oklahoma City - Traditional Native American and non traditional beadwork, jewelry, illustrations, plush dolls, woodcarving, custom painted clothing, sewing (quilts, pillows, bags). There are 4 of us, and one apprentice, though right now most of everything is mine. I run this craziness with my mom Catherine and my sister Mauli and my husband Frank also make things for us. We are training my daughter in various things so she is also involved.

What is/was your inspiration?
When I was growing up, my grandmother was always making something. She was sewing me doll clothes for my barbies, she made my clothes, she made dolls, her and my mom would quilt, my mom taught me how to bead. It was just always part of my life. I love doing it. Which is why I think my business has such a wide variety of things. I learned to make doll patterns and clothing patterns from my grandma and my mom and I love making dolls. Doing that and the beadwork just make me happy. Plus I love to draw.

What is your favorite media and why?
Beading is mine. It is calming to me, plus it is part of my heritage. I do lots of beadwork for my family for their dance regalia and I also do it for other dancers as well. I have recently started doing more non traditional pieces for other people. It is very time consuming though. I think people don't understand the time that goes into it.

Where would you like to see yourself 5/10 years from now in this project?
I would love to be doing this full time and making a decent living from it. I wouldn't mind having a little storefront, someplace to sell things and maybe teach classes on how to do things. I would really like to teach beading classes.

Do you have any keys of success to share?
Keep working, build up an inventory. Get out there to shows, even if they are small ones. I set up in the Plaza District once a month and it has been a great experience. You meet people and you never know what kind of opportunities you can get out of it. I also market like crazy on twitter and Facebook and Tumblr. Just keep at it and don't get discouraged. Eventually sales pick up, they just started to for me! It's kind of exciting.

Tell us one thing crazy about yourself.
I can't sit still. I have to be constantly doing something. I get really fidgety if I am not making something, reading something, anything. It drives people crazy lol.

What is something you would love to learn how to do?
I would love to learn how to make stained glass. It's something I have always wanted to do.

What is your favorite color?
Mine is red, my mom's is yellow, my husband's is green, my sister's is purple, and my daughter's changes between purple and pink.

What is one thing you love about Oklahoma?
The people really are very helpful in a crisis. It always astounds me how the community comes together here when it is needed. I think it's amazing.

Networking can be tricky business. I'm sure we also love to share our thoughts, ideas, comments, suggestions, kudos, etc. to other artistic personalities via blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc. And by leaving these "comments" we are networking. And did you know that this is a PERFECT opportunity to get someone to notice you?

But, no one will notice a name without a face. You need an avatar. However, it's a pain to load an avatar up on every single type of networking site. Enter Gravatar! (en.gravatar.com) Gravatar is a Globally Recognized Avatar system. You simply enter your e-mail, add an image to it, select your personal main sources of reaching out to people and boom...no more blank avatars when you leave comments on people's blogs. No more cutesy Graphic images on Wordpress instead of your shop logo (which is what I'm using) or a picture of yourself. Put a face to that name. You'll hear back from people more often. It makes that connection more personal, more meaningful. And it will encourage people to take a look at your store, blog, etc.

Gravatar has some other great features as well. There's a video that explains it all on their main page. I encourage you to head on over to their site (en.gravatar.com) and put a face to that name! You'll certainly be glad you did!

Amanda Lipscomb - Edmond, OK - Children's Decor (Sewing and Art)

What is/was your inspiration? My kids. I never got into sewing until I had my son. Once I had him I wanted to make everything he had in his room unique to him. I had already been painting just for fun but I got into mixing medias for my children's rooms and more fun art sprung from my little imagination.

What is your favorite media and why? Sewing. I love that I can mentally shut off everything else and just focus on creating, and creating something useful at that! :) I get such pleasure out of using the things I've made.
Where would you like to see yourself 5/10 years from now in this project? I honestly don't know. I'm just kind of riding the wave as it were. We shall see where it takes me. I'd love to say just creating creating creating. Whether it be for my shop or just for myself and my family. That's all that matters to me in the end. Well...as far as my crafting is concerned. ;)

Do you have any keys of success to share? Ha! I wish. I guess it's to make connections and surround yourself with family and friends who believe in you. (Maybe enough to be your first customers!) Because until you have a support system to help you get going it's going to be a slow start!
Tell us one thing crazy about yourself. Oh my! Hmmm...I can often be caught listening to The Imagination Movers (a kid's music group/show) in my minivan, cranked up loud, singing my heart out...and my kids aren't even in the car with me! (I should hang my head in shame at that!)

What is something you would love to learn how to do? Sew my own clothes. It scares the begeezes out of me. I don't know why.

Favorite color? Robin's Egg Blue. And yet, I don't think I have that color anywhere in my house. Weird.

What is one thing you love about Oklahoma? That it's not as humid as South East Texas! :)

An Oklahoma Treasure

Hi, Danielle here! For my blog update this week, I thought I would write about a little Antique Thrift Shop I found near my hometown of Sapulpa. I live in OKC now, but I’m from the Tulsa area, and have seen this strange building many times on my way back and forth down Route 66.

Finally, the last time I was home, I had the opportunity to stop with my parents to check it out. As you drive through Kellyville on Route 66, you can see a boat that looks like it has crashed into a building – or a building that looks like it has crashed into a boat. The Treasure Boat Antique Thrift Shop has a large boat sticking out of its side and another, smaller boat sitting on its porch.

Upon walking inside, we found out that the boat is actually a part of the building now, and from the inside of the store, you can walk into the boat and check out the antiques that line its shelves. Almost all of the items there were surprisingly really reasonably priced. I’ve already sold a vintage Mickey Mouse paint set that I got there – and made a profit. If you have money to invest in items for resale right now, it would be worth checking out.

A large tree in the center of the store supports the roof, and the shop has beautiful, glossy, hardwood floors. And they have air conditioning that felt really good after a long day of garage sale-ing. Another interesting thing about the store is that if you’re a veteran, you get to sign the boat! And they have a fake wheel and levers that you can pull to pretend to drive the store (which is what I’m doing in the picture)

Hi! My name is Donna and I live in Yukon,OK... that's just a little west of OKC. I am a handcrafted jewelry maker.

Donna, where does your inspiration come from?

I live in a world of inspiration!! Sometimes it's a particular semi-precious stone and it's colorations,or maybe it's the supreme sparkle of a Swarovski crystal. I will also take from what mother nature gives us in the beautiful colors of a fall afternoon or a spring morning.I will also look at GOD's creatures a songbird, a butterfly, or maybe a dragonfly or a hummingbird. My inspiration is all around me and I try to find the beauty from nature.

What is your favorite media to work with?

Hmmm...my favorite media...it would be so tough to pick just one, there is so much beauty in jewelry components. I'd have to say artisan glass. I have seen the most incredible creations from hand blown glass,also Dichroic glass.

Where would you like to see yourself 5/10 years from now in this project?

I am hopeful that in 5-10 years that I would be a successful seller, with a large customer base,much more knowledge in selling online and using social media to have a large following on Facebook, Twitter and my blog. I also may be teaching my craft to newcomers to jewelry making.As far as "Keys to Success"...

I think I would be developing a large customer or fan base by always putting the customer first,having a good relationship and friendly communications. I try to treat each customer as if they were the only customer I have. I also think you should be open to new ideas and trends.

What is one of your keys to success?

I think you should develop a good repoire with all fellow Artisans, especially in your own craft, LEARN FROM OTHERS.LEARN from your mistakes and SHARE with others.I also feel very strongly that you should have a good balance between your craft and your family and others important in your life. Don't forget the reason you were put here.

What is one crazy thing about you?

Hmmm...only ONE crazy thing?LOL...Wow...that's a real tough one...O.K....first a disclaimer:This act took place when I was MUCH younger and quite impetuous (or as I call it...stupid)..LOL. I hitch hiked all the way from Jacksonville, Florida to Denver CO because we had moved and I wanted to be with my friends again.Upon not finding anyone I knew and seeing THAT was a crazy idea(I was going to live there)!! I then set out to California where I was born, because we moved from there when I was only 2 years old.and I think I was just "trying to find myself"!!Well I don't know what I was esxpecting but it wasn't as magical as I thought it would be...so I proceeded to hitchhike all the way up US1(the scenic route along the coast),sleeping on the beaches at night and having fun in the daytime!! I got tired and homesick so I called my Mom and asked if I could come home...and then I did...that was the CRAZIEST THING I ever did!!

What is something you would love to learn how to do?

I would LOVE to learn to make handcrafted glass, take some classes even.

What is your favorite color?

My favorite color is PURPLE...

What do you love about Oklahoma?

The ONE thing I love about Oklahoma is the PEOPLE. I traveled all over the country and overseas as my Dad was in the Air Force. I've met so many people from so many regions and locations. Oklahoma people are by far THE most friendly people I have EVER met.

The featured seller of the week is Karen from Chocolate Dog Studio. Karen lives in Tulsa and loves sewing and paper crafts.

Karen, where does your inspiration come from?

My main inspiration comes from the colors and textures in the paper or fabrics. I love putting different colors and textures together in the fabrics and then also the paper crafts. It gives me great joy to see a fabric or paper, envision a completed item, create it and then see the finished item. It is exciting to me to see things appear out of raw materials, recycled materials, or gifted materials that were useless to someone else. It is a little addicting to take a piece paper that someone was going to throw away and make something to sell.

What is your favorite media to work with?

My favorite media is (at this time) working with the paper and then also fabric. In the past I have crocheted, knitted, dabbled in different drawing mediums.

Where would you like to see yourself 5/10 years from now in this project?

In about 5/10 years I hope that I am still following this path laid out before me. I just have no idea where it is heading. I am much happier when I am creating than when I am not creating. It is just something I have to do, whether it is appreciated by buyers or not. :0) Though like everyone, buyers are confirmation that I am doing the right thing!

What is one of your keys to success?

Be nice and kind to everyone that comes across your path, regardless of how they treat you. You are leaving a lasting impression with suppliers, customers and other sellers.

What is one crazy thing about you?

20 kindergartners with paint and paintbrushes doesn't scare me. A regular class full of kids with an academic subject is terrifying! (I used to teach art.)

What is something you would love to learn how to do?

I would love to weave with a giant room sized loom. It just sounds like so much fun.

What is your favorite color?

Green, some pinks, and red are my favorite colors. I wear green most often.

What do you love about Oklahoma?

I love Oklahoma people, they are friendly, concerned and most of all Real. We are used to wide open spaces, fairly large cities, small towns, backwoods.

Hi! My name is Danielle Furstenberg. I live in Oklahoma City, and just started doing Etsy as a full-time job when I finished school in May. It looks right now like I’ll be writing for the OKEtsy Team Blog on the second and fourth weeks of the month.

I just officially started my business in January of this year, so I thought it might be a good idea to share two of the most helpful things I did when getting started. First, I super duper duper recommend signing up for and taking a free New Business Workshop. The Oklahoma Tax Commission offers one every few days all over the state. I was able to take one just a few blocks from my house. The one I went to was about three hours long, but the time flew by because it was SO informative and helpful.

I knew very little about the legal side of starting a business, so this workshop helped me a lot. I learned how to register for a FEIN number, open a business checking account, officially register my business, report sales tax, register my trade name – and I learned about things I can purchase for my business that are tax exempt.

Secondly, Etsy offers so many helpful articles for getting started. In the months prior to opening my shops, I tried to read a few articles from the Etsy Seller Handbook every night before going to bed. By the time I was ready to officially open my shop, I had learned a little about everything from photography and writing item descriptions to shipping internationally and pricing items.

Having that base of knowledge was incredibly beneficial to me starting out. I try to still read a few new articles from Etsy each week, so I’m always learning, but in reality it’s been several weeks since I’ve made time for that.

Known affectionately as Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest shopping events of the season. Most big box stores will be offering special savings that shoppers will have the joy of earning by snatching, grabbing, running each other over with carts, and other things our mothers certainly taught us not to do. There is another option, though: get your handmade shopping on!

On Black Friday, lots of Etsy sellers will be offering discounts throughout their shops. The biggest bonus? You don't even have to leave the house. Remember to search OKEtsy Team to find great items made by our friends right here in the Sooner State.

Tulsa's most rockin' craft show, Indie Emporium, has accepted a whole slew of Disciples of Etsy team members to its line-up. Check out the Vendor page over the next couple of weeks for the full list. Remember: Indie Emporium is October 9 and 10 in T-Town. Check out the web site for times, ticket information, and more.

On November 6 and 7, the BUST-approved Girlie Show will again showcase some of the finest independent female crafters in Oklahoma City. This year, an impressive crowd of team members will be representing, many for the first time. The 2009 vendor list is not yet available, but keeping checking back. You don't want to miss this great event!

The Felt Bird Grand Opening

Tomorrow is the grand opening of The Felt Bird, a new store in Enid featuring many locally made items. The store owners, StelaBird and musician Riley Jantzen, have created a haven for handmade, original and sustainable items. The shop will be selling many items created by team members. If you're able to reach Enid tomorrow evening, then go! The fun begins at 6 p.m. and will feature the music of Ali Harter. The Felt Bird is located at 124 E. Broadway Ave. in downtown Enid.

The fall craft fair season is about to come into full swing, so now is the time to prepare. We did a post in February about how to prepare for a craft show. A little later, we posted some booth inspiration for your perusal. Last week, our own AudreyEclectic, who will soon round out her first year on the circuit, wrote a nice post on her blog about her experiences with craft shows and some tips for beginners. It's a great read for brand-new booth dwellers as well as those of us you've been around the block at least a little while. Creating for a Cause: Craft Hope

I know some of our members have participated in this in the past, but I wanted to spread the word to all our blog readers. If you've ever wanted to make something for a child in need, Craft Hope is here. The fourth project -- sock monkeys for preschoolers at a burn camp -- is underway, and you don't have to be an amazing seamstress to get in on the action. Now through September 18, you can send handmade sock critters to the folks at Craft Hope to distribute to the campers in California. If you're well-versed in the world of socks-into-stuffies like FriedOkra or a newbie like the rest of us, your contributions are still welcomed. See the site for details.

Meet Our Members: Funkybella!

I want to formally present to you the team's new co-leader: Katie, AKA Funkybella! Katie has already come with great ideas and enthusiasm for the team, so I'm very excited to introduce you to her.

1. Introduce yourself.

Hi! I’m Katie Winters and my shop name is Funkybella. I live in Norman with my husband, Jason. We have a cat (Saturn), a Quaker parrot (Sunny), and a chinchilla (Ella Bella. I named Funkybella after her).

2. Tell us about what you make. When did you start making it and why?

What I make is always growing and evolving. I knit, crochet, embroider, needle felt, wet felt, use resin, and wrap accessories. I also sell vintage clothes and household items. My favorite and best-selling craft is making jewelry using vintage parts. I started making my vintage jewelry after discovering some beautiful supplies from Etsy sellers. I enjoy finding different parts that compliment each other, such as a vintage harlequin stone and an antiqued gold ring band. The pieces I make have a distinctive look.

3. How long have you been crafting? When did you decide to start selling your handmade goods?

I’ve always made things. I was homeschooled for some time, and I often completed crafts as part of it. In the fall of 2008, I encouraged my sister, a fine art painter, to open an Etsy shop. I had learned about Etsy from an ad in Craft magazine. Kelly opened her shop (murphystudios.etsy.com), and wanted to know why I didn’t have one of my own. At first I didn’t think I had anything to offer, but at the end of February 2009 I opened Funkybella, and I’ve been encouraged by its success so far.

4. Other than what you sell, what's your favorite thing to craft?

I use to be a professional photographer (I belonged to a gallery co-op and was the Chief photographer for a newspaper). I like to photograph and then edit pictures. I also bake and garden.

5. What do you love best about Etsy?

I can find almost anything on Etsy! I recently traded some of my jewelry for all the seeds I needed for this planting season! I love when one of my customers leaves me feedback telling me how much they adore their new item. I also enjoy knowing my jewelry is being purchased from women in other countries (France, Canada and Australia, so far).

6. What's your favorite thing about Oklahoma?

I’ve only lived here for two years, so I’m still exploring. I would really like to go camping and visit some state parks. I feel very safe in Oklahoma; the crime rate is very low.

It's time to meet Adrian, the brains behind the delightful operation that is Fried Okra.

1. Introduce yourself
I'm Adrian and my shop is Fried Okra! After many years I'm back in my hometown of Ponca City, or as I like to say... two hours from everything! I spend my days running my kids to and fro, squeezing in some sewing time when I can. Lots of late nights and coffee around here!

2. Tell us about what you make. When did you start making it and why?
I make two sorts of things, Sock Monkeys and patchwork/embroidered bags and pouches. I made my first Sock Monkey on a whim out of a pair of angora socks I knew I would never wear. For a girl who buys many MANY socks I'm super picky about what sort of socks I'll wear! He turned out absolutely horrible but nonetheless I was hooked :) So many cute socks out there, such a shame to put them in shoes and under pant legs! I've been a sewer and quilter for much longer than I was making Sock Monkeys and with my ever growing "Crafter's ADD" I had to find a way to keep sewing and quilting but on a much smaller level. So many cute fabrics out there!

3. How long have you been crafting? When did you decide to start selling your handmade goods?
I've been sewing since I was a kid, my mom has always been an avid crafter... a jack of all trades for sure! I started making Sock Monkeys a few years ago and when I ran out of family and friends to give them away to I decided to give selling a shot. I've been floored by the response, to say the least! Then when I added bags and pouches to the inventory I felt like I filled my missing piece :) Fabric has always been a weakness and when I figured out a way to use all my favorite fabrics, buttons, embroideries, and wit in one little compact project I was a happy girl! Now when I get sick and tired of sewing on arms I can do a little piecing. Then when I get sore hands from embroidering I can give a pair of socks some LIFE :)

4. Other than what you sell, what's your favorite thing to craft?
I'm totally hooked on old books. I hit up our library's book sale all the time, you wouldn't believe what people just give away! I use them (especially the sad water damaged or missing pages ones) to make envelopes, tags, stickers, buttons, etc. I also just plain ole hoard them! My most recent find is a *huge* book of Etiquette, the title and size alone had me. When I opened it up I was even more excited, the whole book was backwards and upside down. Sold!

5. What do you love best about Etsy?
I'm going to be very general on this! I love how easy Etsy is to use. Now a stay-at-home momma like myself can do what she loves and make a little money on a very do-able level.

6. What's your favorite thing about Oklahoma?
Where else in the country do you get the chance to do a mock Land Run in elementary school?? I'm going to have to say I love storm season around here too. Hours of Rick Mitchell, beautifully colored radar maps, standing out on the porch watching the storm blow in, and the eventual run to the basement. It's exhilarating!

7. Do you sell anywhere else or have a blog, Twitter, MySpace, etc.?
I have my Etsy shop (http://friedokra.etsy.com) and am slowly branching out to craft shows and the like. I do have a blog that needs updating, http://invisiblespray.blogspot.com/.

After stumbling across GemsByEm on Etsy's front page Monday and marvelling at the number of sales she's made in the two years since she joined (434 as of the moment), I got to wondering who the team's top sellers were. So, I started looking through everyone's shop and taking notes. I was amazed at how many Disciples of Etsy members have made more than 100 sales. In fact, five of our wonderful crafters have more than 1,000 sales under their belts! That's pretty amazing, if you ask me -- so amazing, in fact, that they deserve their own post. How about this one? Sounds perfect! Here they are in ascending order.

5. Jennifer's Bows n More, who sells dog tag necklaces, Scrabble tile images, and other goodies has sold 1,401 items since opening shop two years ago. Her stuff is perfectly adorable and fun.

Blue Dome Arts Festival

Those looking for great handmade items and fun, friendly artists should look no further than the Blue Dome Arts Festival in Tulsa this weekend. Around 200 vendors in 123 booths will be set up to delight you with their unique goods all made by hand. While you're there, make sure to say hello to JDStar and saralynnmo in Booth #55 and the Tulsa Craft Mafia gals in Booths #104 and 105. Here are the details, folks:

Where: Blue Dome district downtown, 2nd and Elgin area

When: Friday noon to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: Free free free!

Why: I just told you!

Blue Dome runs at the same time as Mayfest (i.e. that other festival), just a few blocks away. I highly recommend going there for a giant cinnamon roll and the student art exhibit, then come by Blue Dome for 100% awesome, local art for sale. Make sure not to miss the Art Car Parade at 2 p.m. Saturday starting at 2nd and Elgin!

The Disciples of Etsy has a new little friend as of yesterday. Samann1121 -- aka Jessie -- had her long-awaited first daughter on April 26. Hip hip hurray! Though she's still less than a day old, the whole team is excited about her arrival. We know she'll be as creative and crafty as her mom in no time. Understandably, Jessie's taking some time off from her store to acclimate to life as a mother. We look forward to her triumphant return when she's ready.

Congrats to new Mommy and Daddy on a job well done! :)
